Happy Hong Kong “Harbour Chill Carnival” Opens Today
90 Performance Groups Bring Exhilarating New Summer Experiences to Victoria Harbour for Five Weekends in a Row 

Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), the “Harbour Chill Carnival”, a Happy Hong Kong initiative, was launched recently  , bringing a series of free street performances, X-game shows and Music Shows in the Harbour along the Wan Chai harbourfront in the evenings of five consecutive weekends. This  offers  local public and visitors a chance to enjoy a fun-filled summer with a beautiful view of Victoria Harbour.

The event debuted on July 8  with free entertainment. Participants in the area can  enjoy  summer  activities against the scenic Victoria Harbour and  chill out with fun.

At the ceremony, Mr Paul Chan said, “‘The Harbour Chill Carnival’ will be held for five consecutive weekends. During this period,  ”A Symphony of Lights” show will be enhanced. We hope that both residents and visitors can enjoy happy weekends, and more spectacular activities as the city has fully recovered. In particular, everyone can make the most of the consumption vouchers as the second round will be distributed next Sunday.

Mr Dane Cheng, HKTB Executive Director said, “The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is delighted to bring together popular culture, music and street performances from around the world in a single event through the ‘Harbour Chill Carnival’ to showcase the diverse and vibrant face of Hong Kong. This is the first time the HKTB hosted a large-scale land-and-sea carnival at the Wan Chai waterfront. The performers and participating groups hope to freshen up and the weekends with exciting entertainment and allow the public to enjoy the world-renowned night view of the Harbour and sea breeze while enriching visitors’ experience in Hong Kong.”

Asian Diva Kelly Chen Kicks Off the Series of Events

“Harbour Chill Carnival” boasts an extensive assortment of entertainment. Among the activities, only the Music Shows in the Harbour are ticketed. Staging against the scenic harbourview, the Music Shows present a rich feast of music. Tonight, local legend Kelly Chen fired up the five-week Music Show marathon of wide music spectrum on the water stage with upbeat pop songs and energetic dances, bringing the crowd to their feet. The first session of the Music Shows also featured popular homegrown girl group Lolly Talk and indie band Nowhere Boys, boosting the good vibes on site!

Following the electrifying debut session, the Best Male Mandarin Singer of this year’s Taiwan Golden Melody Awards HUSH, continued to amuse the audience together with local vocal powerhouse Jason Chan. Another Golden Melody winner, the newly-crowned Best Band Cosmos People will join local singer-songwriter Jay Fung tomorrow to enliven the harbourfront tomorrow.

Action-packed line up to bring laughter all over the Harbourfront

In addition to the Music Shows in the Harbour, the “Harbour Chill Carnival” also presents a series of exciting activities. A strong cast of local, Mainland and overseas street performers and X-game athletes will also show off their skills at various locations at the Wan Chai Waterfront, demonstrating Hong Kong’s diversity and vibrant energy together with the Carnival-only Waterfront Pyrotechnic Edition of A Symphony of Lights. Members of the public can join these events ticket-free at the Wan Chai Harbourfront anytime during the Carnival.

Programmes on the debuting Saturday (8 July) and Sunday (9 July):

1. Street performances – Light up the night

The street performances combine local and foreign street performers’ innovation and skills and bring in a harbourfront show of different themes every week. For the debuting week, the “Shimmer & Shine” performance immersed the audience in brightly coloured lights. Former champion rhythmic gymnast from Australia and seasoned cruise show performers joined forces to present an LED hula show to brighten up the evening Harbour. A stilt-walker duo dressed up in beautifully lit outfit and interact with the crowd while demonstrating their excellent balance! What’s more, local artists also mingled with the audience through an LED Poi performance, integrating Maori ball-tossing dances from New Zealand to invigorate the Wan Chai waterfront with brilliant hues!

2. X-game performances for climax

With the global X-game craze, various X-games are being included in the Olympic Games. Local, Mainland and Japanese BMX athletes and skateboarders will showcase some of the best tricks in the sport at the outdoor X-game area at Wan Chai Waterfront. This week, Chinese skateboard national team athlete Chen Ye and Hong Kong skateboarder Luk Chun-yin “Chun Chai”, Champion of Skateboard – Game of Skate in 2014 Asian Beach Games, put on a heart-throbbing performances in the debuting show. Yusuke from Japan and local athlete Car Wing added to the excitement with BMX cycling. What’s more, local break dance group Good Job Brother presented their unique moves, making the audience cheer in excitement!

3. Additional Waterfront Pyrotechnic effect for A Symphony of Lights

Starting from today, A Symphony of Lights is staged at 8pm every evening with enhanced lighting effects for one month. There will be special waterfront pyrotechnic effect during the ten weekend evenings, echoing the radiant night views of the vibrant Victoria Harbour.

To make the most out of the Carnival, participants can check out the sips and bites area to enjoy a variety of refreshments such as snacks, beer and sparkling wine, which will add more fun and enjoyment to the events.

การท่องเที่ยวฮ่องกง (Hong Kong Tourism Board: HKTB) เปิดงานอีเวนต์ใหม่ “Harbour Chill Carnival” ภายใต้แคมเปญ Happy Hong Kong เมื่อวันที่ 8 กรกฎาคม นำขบวนสตรีทโชว์ การแสดง X-game และ Music Shows มาให้ชมฟรีทุกเย็นวันหยุดริมท่าเรือหว่านไจ๋ต่อเนื่องจุใจถึง 5 สัปดาห์ เปิดโอกาสให้ชาวฮ่องกงและนักท่องเที่ยวเต็มอิ่มไปกับฤดูร้อนที่พรั่งพรูไปด้วยความสนุกสนาน โดยงานจะจัดขึ้นตั้งแต่วันที่ 8 กรกฎาคม เป็นต้นไป ส่งความสุขฟรีให้ผู้เข้าร่วมงานท่ามกลางทิวทัศน์อันงดงามของอ่าววิคตอเรียและความรื่นเริงตลอดฤดูร้อน

1.   การแสดงสตรีทโชว์ – Light Up the Night

การแสดงสตรีทโชว์ครั้งนี้ผสานรวมแนวคิดใหม่ๆ และทักษะที่สั่งสมมาของนักแสดงสตรีทโชว์ของฮ่องกงและต่างประเทศ มาพร้อมกับการแสดงริมท่าเรือในธีมที่แตกต่างกันทุกสัปดาห์ สำหรับสัปดาห์แรก การแสดง “Shimmer & Shine” จะพาทุกคนไปดื่มด่ำกับแสงสีที่สดใส อดีตแชมป์ยิมนาสติกลีลาจากออสเตรเลียและนักแสดงมากฝีมือประจำงานเทศกาลผนึกกำลังร่วมการแสดงหมุนห่วงแบบเล่นแสงสี LED เพื่อเพิ่มสีสันให้กับท่าเรือยามเย็น ดูโอตัวตลกขายาวสวมชุดที่มีไฟสวยงามจะมาร่วมเล่นไปกับฝูงชนไปพร้อมๆ กับการจัดสมดุลของร่างกายที่ยอดเยี่ยม ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น ศิลปินท้องถิ่นยังได้มาเดินเล่นเต้นระบำร่วมกับฝูงชนในชุดการแสดง LED Poi ซึ่งผสมผสานการเต้นโยนลูกบอลของชาวเมารีจากนิวซีแลนด์เพื่อชาร์จพลังให้กับพื้นที่ริมน้ำในหว่านไจ๋ด้วยสีสันสุดตราตรึงอีกด้วย!

2.   การแสดง X-game เพื่อความตื่นเต้นขั้นสุด

ด้วยความนิยมแบบฉุดไม่อยู่ของ X-game ทั่วโลก ทำให้มีการบรรจุ X-game ต่างๆ ไว้ในรายการการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก นักกีฬา BMX และนักเล่นสเก็ตบอร์ดชาวฮ่องกง จีน และญี่ปุ่น จะมาโชว์เทคนิคที่ยากจะหาใครเทียบเทียมให้รับชมกัน ณ พื้นที่กลางแจ้งสำหรับ X-game บริเวณทางเดินริมน้ำหว่านไจ๋ (Wan Chai Waterfront) สำหรับสัปดาห์นี้ Chen Ye นักกีฬาสเก็ตบอร์ดทีมชาติจีน และ Luk Chun-yin นักสเก็ตบอร์ดชาวฮ่องกง “Chun Chai” แชมป์สเก็ตบอร์ด Game of Skate จากเอเชียนบีชเกมส์ 2014 จะมาโชว์การแสดงสุดเร้าใจเปิดเทศกาล Yusuke จากญี่ปุ่นและนักกีฬาชาวฮ่องกงอย่าง Car Wing จะมาร่วมทวีความตื่นเต้นบนอานจักรยาน BMX นอกจากนี้ กลุ่มนักเต้นเบรกแดนซ์ท้องถิ่น Good Job Brother ยังจะมาสร้างความสั่นสะเทือนให้กับพื้นที่และความตื่นเต้นให้กับผู้ชมด้วยท่าเต้นที่ไม่เหมือนใคร

3.   เฉพาะงานคาร์นิวัลเท่านั้น - เอฟเฟกต์ดอกไม้ไฟพิเศษประกอบการแสดง A Symphony of Lights

นับตั้งแต่วันนี้เป็นต้นไป A Symphony of Lights จะจัดแสดงขึ้นทุกเย็นเวลา 20.00 น. โดยจะมาพร้อมเอฟเฟกต์แสงสีแบบอัปเกรดตลอดหนึ่งเดือน นอกจากนี้ยังมีการแสดงพลุไฟริมน้ำสุดพิเศษในช่วงวันหยุดสุดสัปดาห์เป็นเวลาสิบอาทิตย์ติดต่อกัน ซึ่งจะสะท้อนทิวทัศน์ยามค่ำคืนอันเจิดจรัสของอ่าววิคตอเรีย

นอกจากการแสดงที่คัดสรรมาเป็นอย่างดีแล้ว ผู้ชมยังจะได้เพลิดเพลินไปกับพื้นที่สำหรับจำหน่ายอาหารและเครื่องดื่ม เช่น ของกินเล่น เบียร์ สปาร์กลิงไวน์ ซึ่งแน่นอนว่าจะช่วยทำให้สนุกสุดเหวี่ยงกับงานได้มากกว่าเดิม

Hong Kong Heads into the Future with Digital Art

Since the pandemic, the art industry has faced unprecedented challenges but Asia’s art market has displayed resilience with Hong Kong emerging as the region’s arts & culture hub. Thanks to the city’s success at hosting art events, exhibitions and auctions safely, Hong Kong’s art scene blossomed.

With the busy artistic calendar starting in May, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) launched an ‘Arts in Hong Kong’ campaign – a year long campaign to showcase to a global audience the city’s extraordinary and enduring appeal as an arts and cultural hub. The campaign aims to raise Hong Kong’s international profile further, offering in-depth community arts and cultural tours and interactive art tech experiences to encourage the local public and visitors alike to rediscover the city from a cultural perspective.

Helmed by marquee events – Art Basel Hong Kong, Christie’s Hong Kong Spring Auctions and exciting additions such as French May and Art Central, art events are reporting strong sales and support across all sectors and market segments. And, along with newly opened world class infrastructure at West Kowloon Cultural District; the M+ Museum and the Hong Kong Palace Museum solidify the city’s standing as an arts and culture powerhouse attracting investors and art businesses across the globe.

Digital art, an art form that has gained traction over the years was highly visible in many art events this year. The Hong Kong Museum of Art’s and the upcoming Affordable Art Fair have included digital art elements to cater to growing appetite for digital art. Most notably at Art Basel, where Hong Kong-based moving image pioneer Ellen Pau’s ‘The Shape of Light’, co-commissioned by Art Basel and M+ and supported by UBS, was presented as first major co-commission project on the LED façade of M+.

As a leading Arts and Cultural Hub, Hong Kong continues to pioneer art technology by championing new art trends such as NFT and shining a spotlight on diverse talents.

This year alone, there are upwards of 10 ground-breaking NFT related events in the city. From “A Woman’s World”, a first of its kind in Asia showcasing NFT art by female artists in Hong Kong to Asia’s largest NFT exhibition “ARTAVERSE” featuring more than 100 exhibitors to K11 MUSEA’s “METAVISION”, an ambitious showcase of more than 200 NFT works around the mall.

Derry Ainsworth, a Hong Kong based NFT artist and Creative Director of Digital Art Fair Asia hopes to cultivate and inspire a new generation of art collectors to embrace the use of digital technology to explore the beauty of art and culture.

“I truly believe that art in all its forms will always have value, whether it be a digital NFT or a physical painting. Currently, there is a huge interest in NFTs because it is an exciting, technology that offers a new platform for people to collect and experience art. NFT art also benefits both the artist and collector because of traceable secondary sales, security and utility.” Said Derry Ainsworth. 

Derry Ainsworth who is also part of a community of Hong Kong enthusiasts called Hong Kong Super Fan, loves getting inspirations from markets, buildings and especially, neon-lit streets as it brings a sci-fi feel to his works. But Derry is most excited that city is at the forefront of elevating the new artform.

“Hong Kong is celebrating Asian art and culture through the adaptation of technology. By pioneering the digital art spaces with exhibitions like the Digital Art Fair Asia in September, the city has established itself as a supporter in this field by celebrating digital art, educating consumers and to provide a global platform for artists grow.” Added Derry Ainsworth.

Suhanya Raffel, the Museum Director of M+, Hong Kong’s new museum of visual culture predicts that the art ecology of Hong Kong will expand and amplify in areas that have not been explored, with M+ playing a pivotal role that contributes and leads the growth of the ecology.

She added that, “M+ has also been looking into NFT amid the rising popularity of metaverse. Our curators have begun to explore the meaning and long-term impacts of NFT as it rises in prominence. Hong Kong has a great potential of turning NFT into a new kind of art display that drives technological development and community engagement beyond the geographical boundaries, opening doors to a novel viewing experience for museum visitors and collectors alike.”

As investment in NFTs continue to grow exponentially, the art ecosystem needs best-in-class digital solutions to reassure investors and collectors while providing artists with the platform to showcase their work. With buy-in from public, private sectors and continued investment in the arts, cultural and technological infrastructure, Hong Kong is ready to be the global digital arts hub.

นำทัพความสำเร็จด้วยยอดรายได้ที่แข็งแกร่งจากงานยักษ์ใหญ่อย่าง Art Basel Hong Kong งานประมูล Christie’s Hong Kong Spring Auctions และเสริมทัพด้วยงานพิเศษ อย่าง French May และ Art Central ถือได้ว่าอีเวนต์ศิลปะได้รับการสนับสนุนที่แข็งแกร่งจากทุกภาคส่วนและกลุ่มตลาดเป็นอย่างดี นอกจากนี้ โครงสร้างพื้นฐานระดับโลกที่เพิ่งเปิดตัวไปได้ไม่นาน อย่าง ย่านวัฒนธรรมเกาลูนตะวันตก พิพิธภัณฑ์ M+ และพิพิธภัณฑ์พระราชวังฮ่องกง (Hong Kong Palace Museum) ยังช่วยส่งเสริมจุดยืนของฮ่องกงในฐานะมหาอำนาจด้านศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมที่ดึงดูดนักลงทุนและธุรกิจศิลปะจากทั่วโลก

ดิจิทัลอาร์ตในฮ่องกง: นิทรรศการ NFT ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในเอเชีย 

ดิจิทัลอาร์ต ซึ่งเป็นศิลปะรูปแบบหนึ่งที่เคยต้องเผชิญกับเส้นทางอันไม่ค่อยสวยหรูนักในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมา ได้กลับมาเฉิดฉายอย่างเด่นชัดในอีเวนต์ศิลปะหลายงาน พร้อมกระแสความนิยมที่เพิ่มขึ้นในงานศิลป์แบบดิจิทัลในปีนี้ ทั้ง พิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะฮ่องกง (Hong Kong Museum of Art) และงาน Affordable Art Fair ที่กำลังจะมีขึ้น ก็ได้มีการผนวกรวมชิ้นงานศิลปะดิจิทัลเข้ามามากขึ้นตามกระแสความนิยม โดยมีชิ้นงานที่สะดุดตาที่สุดจากงาน Art Basel ก็คือ ผลงาน ‘The Shape of Light’ ของผู้บุกเบิกภาพเคลื่อนไหวจากฮ่องกง Ellen Pau จากการคอมมิชชันร่วมกันระหว่าง Art Basel และ M+ และได้รับการสนับสนุนจาก UBS นับว่าเป็นโปรเจคใหญ่ครั้งแรก ซึ่งฉายบนจอ LED ขนาดยักษ์หน้าอาคาร  M+

ในฐานะศูนย์กลางศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมชั้นนำ ฮ่องกงยังเป็นผู้บุกเบิกเทคโนโลยีศิลปะ ด้วยการสนับสนุนเทรนด์ศิลปะใหม่ ๆ เช่น NFT และให้พื้นที่แสดงความสามารถแก่พรสวรรค์ที่หลากหลาย

และแค่ในปีนี้ ทางฮ่องกงก็ได้จัดงานที่เกี่ยวข้องกับ NFT กว่า 10 งาน ไม่ว่าจะเป็น “A Woman’s World” ครั้งแรกในเอเชีย ซึ่งจัดแสดงศิลปะ NFT ที่สร้างสรรค์โดยศิลปินหญิงในฮ่องกง ไปจนถึง นิทรรศการ NFT ที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในเอเชีย “ARTAVERSE” ซึ่งมีผู้เข้าร่วมจัดแสดงผลงานมากกว่า 100 ราย สู่ “METAVISION” ของห้าง K11 MUSEA นิทรรศการครั้งใหญ่ที่รวมงาน NFT กว่า 200 งานไว้รอบๆ ตัวห้าง

Derry Ainsworth ศิลปิน NFT ในฮ่องกงและ Creative Director ของ Digital Art Fair Asia หวังที่จะปลูกฝังและสร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้นักสะสมงานศิลปะรุ่นใหม่หันมาใช้เทคโนโลยีดิจิทัลในการสัมผัสความงามของศิลปะและวัฒนธรรม

“ผมเชื่ออย่างยิ่งว่า ศิลปะ ไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในรูปแบบใดก็ตาม ล้วนมีคุณค่าเสมอ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น NFT ดิจิทัลหรือภาพวาดบนแผ่นกระดาษ ในปัจจุบันนี้ ผู้คนต่างให้ความสนใจอย่างมากกับงาน NFT เนื่องจากเป็นเทคโนโลยีที่น่าตื่นเต้นและเป็นแพลตฟอร์มใหม่ที่ให้ผู้คนได้สะสมและสัมผัสกับงานศิลปะ นอกจากนี้ ศิลปะ NFT ยังเป็นประโยชน์ต่อทั้งศิลปินและนักสะสมด้วยการจำหน่ายแบบ Secondary Sales ที่สามารถตรวจสอบย้อนกลับได้ มีความปลอดภัย และให้สิทธิประโยชน์ต่าง ๆ” Derry Ainsworth กล่าว

Derry Ainsworth หนึ่งใน Hong Kong Super Fan หรือกลุ่มอินฟลูเอนเซอร์ที่มีความสนใจในฮ่องกง ซึ่งเป็นผู้ที่ชื่นชอบค้นหาแรงบันดาลใจจากตลาด ตัวอาคาร และโดยเฉพาะถนนที่มีแสงไฟนีออนสว่างไสว ซึ่งทำให้ผลงานของเขามีกลิ่นอายความเป็น Sci-fi แถม Derry ยังรู้สึกตื่นเต้นเป็นที่สุด เมื่อฮ่องกงก้าวขึ้นมาเป็นแนวหน้าในการยกระดับศิลปะรูปแบบใหม่

“ฮ่องกงเฉลิมฉลองศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมเอเชียผ่านการปรับตัวของเทคโนโลยี ด้วยการบุกเบิกพื้นที่ศิลปะดิจิทัลผ่านการจัดนิทรรศการต่างๆ เช่น Digital Art Fair Asia ในเดือนกันยายน โดยสถาปนาตัวเองขึ้นเป็นผู้ผลักดันศิลปะสาขานี้ด้วยการขับเคลื่อนศิลปะดิจิทัล ให้ความรู้แก่ผู้บริโภค และจัดหาแพลตฟอร์มระดับโลกเพื่อให้ศิลปินได้เติบโต” Derry Ainsworth เสริม

Suhanya Raffel ผู้อำนวยการพิพิธภัณฑ์ M+ พิพิธภัณฑ์ทัศนศิลป์แห่งใหม่ของฮ่องกง คาดการณ์ว่าระบบนิเวศทางศิลปะของฮ่องกงจะเติบโตและขยายตัวออกไปในขอบเขตใหม่ๆ โดย M+ จะมีบทบาทสำคัญในการสนับสนุนและพาฮ่องกงไปสู่การขยายตัวของนิเวศวิทยานี้

เธอเสริมว่า “M+ ยังได้เจาะลึกศิลปะ NFT ท่ามกลางความนิยมที่เพิ่มขึ้นของเมตาเวิร์ส (Metaverse) ภัณฑารักษ์ของเราเริ่มสำรวจถึงความหมายและผลที่พวกเราจะได้รับในระยะยาวจากงาน NFT ที่มีความโดดเด่นมากขึ้น ฮ่องกงมีศักยภาพที่ดีในการเปลี่ยน NFT ให้กลายเป็นงานศิลปะรูปแบบใหม่ซึ่งขับเคลื่อนการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีและการมีส่วนร่วมของคอมมูนิตี้ที่ไม่ใช่แค่ในฮ่องกงเท่านั้น นับว่าเป็นการเปิดประตูสู่ประสบการณ์การรับชมที่แปลกใหม่สำหรับผู้เยี่ยมชมพิพิธภัณฑ์และนักสะสม”

Discover Wong Tai Sin and Tai O with Chef Shane Osborn of One-MICHELIN-Starred Arcane and Chef Vicky Cheng of One-MICHELIN-Starred VEA in HKTB’s “Hong Kong Chefs’ Playbook”

In Hong Kong Tourism Board’s (HKTB) and the MICHELIN Guide’s latest series “Hong Kong Chefs’ Playbook”, chefs Shane Osborn and Vicky Cheng take viewers to local destinations that inspire their culinary masterpieces.

Shane Osborn of one-MICHELIN-starred Arcane, is one of the most recognisable culinary figures in Hong Kong—a status boosted after his participation in Netflix’s culinary competition, The Final Table. Chef Osborn walks us through the streets of Wong Tai Sin, a peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle in the series’ second installment, introducing viewers to the only landlocked district in all of Hong Kong and home to multiple temples and gardens.

Wong Tai Sin serves as a breath of fresh air at the heart of the city. With an abundance of greenery and open parks, Wong Tai Sin is the perfect source of inspiration for chef Osborn and his mission of promoting sustainability and lessening the industry’s impact on the environment in Hong Kong.

An oasis complete with its own waterfall, the Chi Lin Vegetarian restaurant inside the Nan Lian Garden serves as the perfect backdrop for chef Osborn and host Debbie Wong as they talk about his work in Hong Kong. The restaurant serves vegetarian cuisine which is unique as it is a centuries-old practice.

Known for his passion for plant-based cuisine, chef Osborn shares how locally sourced ingredients play a big part in his own cooking practices and the significance of sustainability and ethical sourcing.

Within Nan Lian Garden’s 3.5 hectares lies another picturesque location, the Song Cha Xie teahouse. Here, chef Osborn and Wong talk about the cultural significance of tea while surrounded by the tranquil atmosphere of the garden. The teahouse offers a variety of teas and dim sum daily and is the perfect accompaniment to soak in the zen-like environment.

Chef Osborn later takes viewers to the Tai Shing Street Market in the neighbourhood. This is both a dry and wet market, with products that range from fruits to fish. Tai Shing Street Market, which also houses various street food stalls for its shoppers, is open all week. For him, supporting and buying from local markets and businesses is the best way to help local farms and reduce carbon footprint.

Chef Vicky Cheng also shares this same sentiment about supporting local producers. He believes that visiting the market himself and building relationships with the shop owners makes for a more meaningful and sustainable way of sourcing ingredients. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, chef Cheng trained at some of the best restaurants in Toronto and New York before he returned to the city where he was born. In 2016, he set up his restaurant VEA and won a Michelin star in just one year of operations.

In another episode of the “Hong Kong Chefs’ Playbook”, chef Vicky introduces viewers to the quaint fishing town dubbed the ‘Venice of Hong Kong’ – Tai O. Known for scenic views of the Tai O river and its village of stilted houses, Tai O is his go-to when looking for a calming escape from the city and his source for ingredients for his restaurants VEA and Wing.

With fishing as one of the primary industries of the village, seafood is abundant in local restaurants and dried fish and shrimp paste are widely known. Chef Cheng recounts how he was introduced to their specialty shrimp paste through a friend whose family runs the Sing Lee Shrimp Sauce & Paste  Manufacturer. Operating for over 80 years now, the manufacturer’s products are still handmade traditionally and entirely out of local products. The pair then try their hand at making the shrimp paste, giving viewers a glimpse of the process from drying up to its packaging.

Next up, authentic local stops! Yick Cheong Ho and The Crossing Boat Restaurant are small and humble establishments that showcase the best of Tai O’s specialties. Before their meal, chef Cheng and Wong make a quick stop at dried seafood shop Yick Cheong Ho to check out the dried seafood the village is renowned for. The store has a wide range of products, from dried scallops to fish maws, and is Chef Cheng’s source for rare dried velvet rice shrimp.

Dried seafood is an integral part of Cantonese cuisine, and The Crossing Boat Restaurant showcases this among stir-fried dishes, and steamed rice wrapped in lotus leaves. As they talk over their meal at the restaurant, viewers are treated to scenic views of the river and the historic stilted houses around them.

Back in his kitchen at VEA, chef Vicky treats viewers to a behind-the-scenes look at his signature salted fish dish. A staple of his for over six years now, chef Vicky’s choice of salted fish and cabbage was inspired by lyrics from HK singer George Lam’s song “分分鐘需要你” (Without the Two of Us) that he first sung to his wife. Inspired by Tai O and his visits with his wife, he infuses his love for  food and his wife through his dish.

Despite being dubbed the “Venice of Hong Kong”, Tai O’s charms are definitely entirely its own.
