The Spanish Embassy in Bangkok, in collaboration with the Thai Film Archive presents the third edition of the Spanish Film Festival (2023). On this occasion, showing an overview of contemporary Spanish cinema of horror and intrigue genre.

At the Festival, six films will be shown in their original version in Spanish, with subtitles in Thai and English, one film each day, between October 30th and November 4th: movies that had great success and were very well received by the public.

A selection, designed for the public to enjoy the good intrigue and horror films made in Spain. Free admission!

The Embassy of Spain Presents Spanish Film Festival, 17 to 21 October 2022

The Embassy of Spain, with the collaboration of House Samyan and the Thai Film Archives, is pleased to announce the launch of the II Spanish Film Festival, this year dedicated to the works of five female Spanish filmmakers.
The Second Edition of Spanish Film Festival in Bangkok
will take place from 17 October to 21 October 2022, at House Samyan, Samyan Mitrtown.

The program aims to promote the empowerment of women and to celebrate inclusiveness and gender equality through the films created by Spanish female filmmakers.

The festival will showcase the best films related to the woman empowerment, inclusiveness and gender equality by selecting 5 Spanish films of the 5 award-winning Spanish female directors.

The Embassy of Spain, with the collaboration of House Samyan and the Thai Film Archives, is pleased to announce the 2nd edition Spanish Film Festival in Bangkok that take place from 17 October to 21 October 2022 at House Samyan, Samyan Mitrtown. This year is dedicated to the works of five female Spanish film directors with the aim of opening a much-needed space to the female vision and talent.

For one week, between October 17 and 21, at House Samyan, the festival will showcase a selection of films directed by five award-winning female directors, acclaimed at festivals, by film critics, and applauded by audiences: Maixabel (2021) by Iciar Bollaín, Summer 1993 (2017) by Carla Simón, Carmen & Lola (2018) by Arantxa Echevarría, Schoolgirls (2020) by Pilar Palomero and Libertad (2021) by Clara Roquet.

A movie will be screened daily in original version with English and Thai subtitles, from 17 to 21 October at 7.00PM. Free tickets will be available at House Samyan since two hours before the time of screening.

With this film selection, the Embassy aims to promote the empowerment of women, offering female references at the forefront of Spanish and also world cinema, with the aim of continuing to advance on the much-needed path of real equality between men and women, one of the pillars of the feminist policy defended by the Spanish Government, both in Spain and in the rest of the world.

Progress in gender equality in Spain has been spectacular in recent decades. However, there is still a long way to go. “We women are half the world, and we should tell half the stories,” says director Carla Simón, recently awarded the Golden Bear at the 2021 Berlinale.

That is what the Embassy of Spain in Bangkok seeks with this 2nd edition of the Spanish Film Festival 2022: to offer a view of the world through the eyes of this five talented, brave, honest Spanish women, in the hope that their work will serve as a reference and inspiration to new generations, with the aim of continuing to advance in the construction of a fairer, richer and more pluralistic society.

In 2000, Maixabel Lasa lost her husband, Juan María Jauregui (a pro- minent Spanish politician), murdered by the terrorist group ETA. Eleven years later, she receives an unusual request: one of the men who killed her husband asks to meet her in the prison where he is serving his sentence, after having broken his ties with the terrorist group. Despite her doubts and immense pain, Maixabel Lasa agrees to meet face to face with the people who killed her beloved husband who had been her partner since she was 16 years old. “Everyone deserves a second chance,” she says when has been asked the reasons why she accepts the request to face the man who killed her husband.

Spain, summer 1993. After the death of her mother from AIDS, Frida, a six- year-old girl, leaves Barcelona and goes to live in the countryside with her aunt and uncle and their daughter, Anna, a three-year-old girl. Frida, who is burdened with grief and pain that she barely understands (her father had also died three years earlier, from the same cause as her mother), will have her first summer with her new family and the new rural environment. An autobiographical story by the director, Carla Simón, the film shows her own vulnerability and helplessness when she lost her mother at her young age.

Carmen is a gypsy teenager who lives in the outskirts of Madrid. Like any other gypsy girls, she is destined to live a life that repeats itself generation after generation, that is, getting married and raising as many children as possible. One day she meets Lola, an unusual gypsy who dreams of going to university, draws graffiti of birds and looks different from other girls. Carmen immediately develops complicity with Lola, and both will try to carry their romance forward, despite the inconveniences and social discri- minations due to the conservatism of their families.

Celia, 11 years old, lives in Zaragoza and studies in a nuns’ school where Brisa arrives from Barcelona. Brisa will push Celia towards adolescence and will make her discover that life holds many truths and lies. The film is set in Spain in 1992, a time of great effervescence (Barcelona Olympic Games, Universal Exposition in Seville) and profound social changes.
