Beyond Animation Festival 2024
12-21 September 2024
The Embassy of France in Thailand and the Thai Animation and Computer Graphics Association (TACGA), with the support of Institut Français Paris, are proud to present the 2024 edition of the BEYOND ANIMATION Festival in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phayao.
The event will feature screenings, workshops, Q&As, and opportunities for students as well as the general public to discover contemporary animated features and to meet with the festival’s guest of honor, French animator Juliette Peuportier. VR (virtual reality) experiences, with support from Astrea and Atlas VR, will also be featured.
BEYOND ANIMATION endeavors to provide a chance for both vocational and professional training. Its extended program will continue until December, offering a range of initiatives aimed at young talents from Thailand, Southeast Asia, and students communities in the field as a whole.
ANIMATION, A KEY ARTISTIC FIELD
Animation is an art, a discipline that can be found in all sectors of entertainment: cinema, television, advertising, social networks. It’s a sector of excellence for both Thailand and France.
France, as Europe’s leading producer and exporter of animation (3rd overall worldwide) boasts a very strong ecosystem of studios and schools in the field, with strong international connections and partnerships. France is also home to the world’s biggest animation film festival and market, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, with its Marché International du Film d’Animation (MIFA). Thailand also hosts a large, ever-growing pool of animation and VFX talents, combining expertise and creativity, often collaborating on international projects. Thai studios are numerous, competitive, and highly varied in regard to their size and editorial lines.
In 2024, the festival’s graphic identity puts the spotlight on elements of Thai folklore, with this French touch in the aesthetic of the drawing. The key visual is the result of a collaboration between French 2D animator and illustrator Sébastien Hivert Mallet and two Rangsit University Digital Arts students, Ms. Darvich Puditpun and Ms. Suteera Somjai.

THE MOST PRECIOUS OF CARGOES
Once upon a time, a poor woodcutter and his wife lived deep in the woods, in Poland. The poor woodcutter lamented not having any children. Once upon a time, a Jewish family, two newborn twins and their parents, were arrested in Paris and deported to the Auschwitz camp. Aboard the train racing towards their certain deaths, the father made a foolish gesture; in a last desperate hope, he threw one of the babies off the train. Once upon a time, as the poor woodcutter’s wife watched what she thought was a freight train pass by, a bundle fell into the snow, turning out to be what she had been waiting for so fervently: a child.
MEANWHILE ON EARTH
Elsa has always been very close to her older brother who mysteriously vanished three years earlier during a space mission. One day, she is contacted from space by an unknown life form claiming to be able to bring her brother back. But there might be a price to pay…

Guilt-ridden mom Paulette promises to cook a meal of chicken and peppers to make up for having wrongly punished her young daughter Linda. Following the death of a distant uncle, a disillusioned young woman arrives in Madrid to empty the apartment he left behind. Before long, Lola is plunged back into his memories, where she finds the obscure traces of her uncle and tries to piece together the puzzle of his past.
MISSING PICTURES: NAOMI KAWASE
In this short comedy, Naomi Kawase, amongst Japan’s most celebrated female filmmakers, revisits a project that she envisioned after her 2015 film Sweet Bean. Oh Debu tells the story of Aya, a 27-year-old overweight and over romantic woman.
GLOOMY EYES
In a world where the sun has decided to hide and never rise again, a very particular zombie boy falls in love with a human girl. Their improbable feelings struggles in a world where the living and the dead cannot peacefully coexist.

Discover weird and wonderful shorts from Ars Electronica Animation Festival on Tour, featuring the best of experimental short films from Austria and beyond, flirting with the worlds of gaming, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, pushing the animation medium to new heights and new limits, with support from the Embassy of Austria.

OUR GUEST OF HONOR JULIETTE PEUPORTIER
Juliette Peuportier is a French 2D animator based in Angoulême, France, a city of international renown for being home to many animators, illustrators and studios. She found her passion for animation after discovering the feature film The King and the Mockingbird (Le Roi et L’oiseau) as a child, and later while watching all of the Studio Ghibli’s movies. After graduating from GOBELINS school in 2015, she specialized in hand drawn traditional animation for feature films. She started her career as an animator on The Breadwinner for Cartoon Saloon, and then worked on many European productions such as Funan, the New People, a Childhood of Martha, Princess Dragon, Little Nicolas: Happy as can be and Mars Express. She recently worked as Head of animation for an animated documentary series called The Legends of Paris: a Tale of the 19th century Artistic Scene and on several animated promotional spots for video games. She is currently working on a French feature film called Arco by the French comic artist Hugo Bienvenu.
Workshops, seminars, and Q&As organised throughout the festival will provide opportunities to look back at Juliette Peuportier’s training in animation, her inspirations, her motivations for choosing this profession. It’s also an opportunity for animation fans to talk to one of the forces behind one of the films in our lineup, Mars Express, as well as to highlight the differences between European animation and other animation schools around the world.

เทศกาลภาพยนตร์แอนิเมชันนี้ประกอบด้วย การฉายภาพยนตร์ เวิร์กชอบ การเสวนา และกิจกรรมอื่น ๆ ที่ส่งเสริมนักศึกษาไทย รวมถึงสาธารณชนให้เข้าถึงภาพยนตร์แอนิเมชันร่วมสมัย และพบกับแขกรับเชิญพิเศษ คุณฌูเลียต เปอปอร์ติเยร์ นักสร้างภาพเคลื่อนไหวชาวฝรั่งเศส นอกจากนี้ ผู้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมยังมีโอกาสได้สัมผัสประสบการณ์โลกเสมือนจริงผ่านแว่นวีอาร์รุ่น Astrea และ Atlas

แอนิเมชันเป็นศิลปะแขนงหนึ่งที่เราพบได้ในสื่อบันเทิงทุกประเภท ไม่ว่าจะเป็นภาพยนตร์ ละครโทรทัศน์ โฆษณา หรือแม้กระทั่งสื่อออนไลน์ และยังเป็นศิลปะที่ทั้งประเทศไทยและประเทศฝรั่งเศสมีความเป็นเลิศ
ประเทศฝรั่งเศส เป็นประเทศแรกในทวีปยุโรปและนับเป็นประเทศที่สามของโลกที่ผลิตและส่งออกภาพยนตร์แอนิเมชัน ประเทศฝรั่งเศสยังมีเครือข่ายสตูดิโอและสถาบันการศึกษาด้านแอนิเมชันที่มีชื่อเสียงและได้รับการยอมรับระดับโลก นอกจากนี้ ดินแดนน้ำหอมแห่งนี้ยังเป็นสถานที่จัดเทศกาลภาพยนตร์และงานแสดงสินค้าด้านแอนิเมชันระดับโลก อย่างเทศกาลภาพยนตร์แอนิเมชันนานาชาติอานซี (AIAFF) และการแสดงงานแอนิเมชันนานาชาติ (MIFA)
ส่วนประเทศไทยเองก็เป็นแหล่งรวมทรัพยากรสำคัญของวงการแอนิเมชันและผู้ชำนาญด้านการทำเอฟเฟกต์พิเศษต่าง ๆ ที่ใช้ในการตัดต่อผลงานระดับสากล โดยประเทศไทยมีสตูดิโออยู่จำนวนมาก ซึ่งมีขนาดและความเชี่ยวชาญแตกต่างกันไป จึงทำให้มีอัตราการแข่งขันสูง
ในปี 2567 นี้ ภาพกราฟิกหลักของเราได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากความเชื่อพื้นบ้านของไทย ผสมกับกลิ่นอายแบบฝรั่งเศสผ่านปลายดินสอของเซบาสเตียง อิแวร์ มาเลต์ นักวาดชาวฝรั่งเศส ร่วมกับนักศึกษาชาวไทย 2 คนจากมหาวิทยาลัยรังสิต

ผู้สร้างหนังหญิงชาวญี่ปุ่นที่ได้รับการชื่นชมมากที่สุดกลับมารื้อฟื้นโปรเจคท์ที่เธอวางแผนไว้หลังจากสร้างหนังเรื่อง “สวีทบีน” ในปี 2015 โอ้ เดบูบอกเล่าเรื่องราวของอาย่า หญิงสาววัย 27 ปี ที่ทั้งน้ำหนักเกินเกณฑ์ และเป็นคนเพ้อฝันแบบหลุดโลก ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้เป็นช่องทางให้นาโอมิ คาวะเสะได้ทำตามความต้องการในการท้าทายตัวเองด้วยการลองสร้างหนังตลก ซึ่งห่างไกลจากผลงานธรรมชาตินิยม และกวีนิพนธ์ชิ้นก่อน ๆ ของเธอ

เมื่อดวงอาทิตย์หมดความอดทนกับเหล่ามนุษย์ และเลือกที่จะไม่โผล่พ้นขอบฟ้าอีกต่อไป หลังจากที่ดวงอาทิตย์ออกห่างจากเหล่ามนษย์ ความมืดได้เข้าปกคลุมโลก และได้ปลุกเหล่าซอมบี้ขึ้นมาจากหลุมศพ ผู้นำเผด็จการทำให้การเป็นซอมบี้ไม่ชอบด้วยกฏหมาย การมีอยู่ของพวกเขาจึงกลายเป็นเรื่องผิดกฎหมายไป ซอมบี้เด็กคนหนึ่ง ชื่อกลูมมี่เตร็ดเตร่คนเดียว โดยไม่มีใครสังเกตเห็น ความจริงก็คือเขารู้สึกอึดอัดเมื่ออยู่กับพวกเดียวกัน ข้างในตัวเขามีสิ่งที่เราไม่อาจมองเห็นหรือเข้าใจได้ มีแค่ธรรมชาติที่รู้ว่าเขานั้นพิเศษ

ร่วมรับชมฝีมือของนักสร้างภาพแอนิเมชันทั้งไทยและฝรั่งเศสผ่านผลงานที่คัดสรรมาแล้วจากสมาคมผู้ประกอบการแอนิเมชันและคอมพิวเตอร์กราฟิกส์ไทย (TACGA) เพื่อชื่นชมความสามารถและทักษะของนักสร้างภาพแอนิเมชันชาวไทย นอกจากนี้ ยังมีภาพยนตร์สั้นอีก 5 เรื่องจัดทำโดยนักเรียนชาวฝรั่งเศส ซึ่งผู้รับชมจะได้เห็นสไตล์ที่แตกต่างระหว่างไทยและฝรั่งเศส ผ่านการรับชมภาพยนตร์ที่ถึงแล้วจะสั้น แต่คุณภาพคับแก้วเหล่านี้
AUSTRIAN EXPERIMENTS
มาร่วมเปิดประสบการณ์ที่แปลกใหม่จากเทศกาล Ars Electronica Animation Festival on Tour ซึ่งรวบรวมภาพยนตร์สั้นที่ดีที่สุดและผลงานอื่น ๆ จากประเทศออสเตรีย ผสมผสานกับการเล่นเกมส์ เพื่อยกระดับแอนิเมชันขึ้นไปอีกขั้น โดยกิจกรรมดังกล่าว ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากสถานเอกอัครราชทูตออสเตรีย

แขกรับเชิญพิเศษ คุณฌูเลียต เปอปอร์ติเยร์
ฌูเลียต เปอปอร์ติเยร์ นักสร้างภาพเคลื่อนไหวแบบสองมิติชาวฝรั่งเศส จากเมืองอ็องกูแล็ม ซึ่งขึ้นชื่อว่าเป็นเมืองเกิดของนักสร้างแอนิเมชัน นักวาดภาพประกอบและสตูดิโอมากมาย ตอนเป็นเด็กเธอเริ่มมีความสนใจในแอนิเมชัน เมื่อเธอได้ชมภาพยนตร์เรื่อง The King and the Mockingbird (Le Roi et L’oiseau) และยิ่งมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ เมื่อเธอได้ชมผลงานของสตูดิโอจิบลิ หลังจบการศึกษาจากโรงเรียน GOBELINS ในปี 2558 เธอเชี่ยวชาญด้านการสร้างภาพเคลื่อนไหวประกอบภาพยนตร์จากการ์ตูนวาดด้วยมือ เธอเริ่มอาชีพนักสร้างภาพเคลื่อนไหวครั้งแรกให้กับภาพยนตร์เรื่อง The Breadwinner ของบริษัท Cartoon Saloon และทำงานให้กับภาพยนตร์ยุโรปหลายเรื่อง เช่น Funan, the New People, a Childhood of Martha, Princess Dragon, Little Nicolas: Happy as can be และ Mars Express ในปัจจุบัน เธอทำหน้าที่เป็นหัวหน้าฝ่ายแอนิเมชันให้กับซีรีย์เชิงสารคดีเรื่อง The Legends of Paris: a Tale of the 19th century Artistic Scene และภาพเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อโปรโมทวิดิโอเกมส์ นอกจากนี้ เธอกำลังทำงานให้กับภาพยนตร์เรื่อง Arco ผลงานของนักเขียนการ์ตูน อูโก้ เบียงเวอนูว์
ตลอดช่วงเทศกาล จะมีเวิร์คชอบ การเสวนา และการพูดคุยแบบถาม-ตอบ จัดขึ้น ซึ่งถือเป็นโอกาสที่เราจะได้เรียนรู้เส้นทางอาชีพด้านแอนิเมชันของฌูเลียต รวมถึงแรงบันดาลใจที่ทำให้เธอเลือกทำงานในสาขานี้อีกด้วย และยังเป็นโอกาสที่เหล่าแฟนคลับภาพยนตร์แอนิเมชันจะได้พูดคุยกับผู้อยู่เบื่องหลังหนึ่งในภาพยนตร์ที่เรานำมาฉาย เรื่อง Mars Express และทำความเข้าใจความแตกต่างระหว่างภาพยนตร์แอนิเมชันของยุโรป กับแบบอื่น ๆ ทั่วโลก
